Union activists protest at GOP headquarters
By ANJEANETTE DAMON

Dressed as grim reapers with cutout faces of U.S. Sen. John McCain, a small parade of union activists carried a cardboard coffin filled with foreclosure notices through a Reno parking lot Monday, hoping to convince voters that the Republican presidential contender isn't the right candidate to turn the economy around.

The stunt outside the Washoe County Republican headquarters was a kickoff event for a three-week tour of battleground states that Change to Win, a coalition of the country's largest labor unions, is undertaking in an effort to both aid the campaign of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and further union organizing efforts.

The group has a variety of similar protests designed to draw media attention planned for the rest of the tour.

In Carson City today, the group will seek to tie McCain, R-Ariz., to Gov. Jim Gibbons, whose approval rating is mired in a string of scandals and missteps.

The tour includes nine union workers, including Judy Bagley, a Las Vegas casino worker, who took McCain to task Monday for a former adviser's comments that the economic downturn was a "mental recession" and that the country was a "nation of whiners."

The adviser, former U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm, no longer advises the campaign.

"McCain has lost all touch with the realities of American families," Bagley said.

With seven homes, it would be difficult for McCain to understand the difficulties of Nevadans facing a record surge in foreclosures, she said.

McCain spokesman Rick Gorka said McCain's economic plan calls for substantial assistance for homeowners in danger of foreclosure. He's called for allowing qualifying homeowners to convert risky loans into FHA-backed 30-year mortgages that reflect the true value of their house.

"Considering John McCain has a legitimate and great plan to help homeowners, engaging in class warfare and engaging in politics of the past doesn't do anything to help us move forward," Gorka said.
