New Report Shows How Our Union Transforms Lives

An eye-opening report describes us as, “A force for public betterment in Florida.”

A new, in-depth report from Florida International University’s Research Institute on Social and Economic Policy (RISEP) captures a comprehensive look at how our union’s groundbreaking achievements have impacted the lives of 16,000 healthcare workers and on society at large.

Although Florida’s unionization rate in 2008 was the second lowest of all 50 states, the report finds that despite these obstacles, forming a union in a right to work state makes a tremendous impact on the lives of its members.
HOW HAS THE UNION TRANSFORMED YOUR LIFE?
A nurse by profession, it is in my blood to care, give and be an advocate for others. SEIU helps me to be more effective to more people. I feel important, needed and that my hard work makes a difference in many lives.
Cindy Henning, RN, St. Petersburg General Hospital

The union has empowered me with strength to take a stand for issues in and out of the workplace. The union has empowered me to demand dignity and respect, to vote and to educate others on policies and elected officials. Sandy Bryant,  South Heritage Health & Rehab Center

Based on more than 400 interviews in three languages, the report finds:

By an overwhelming 16-1 ratio, members report that it has made them “feel better” rather than “feel worse” about work.

The union has transformed the lives of about a third of its membership whom it has caused to become more attuned to public affairs.
