Representative Ronald Brisé Stands With Nursing Home Workers

On December 10th, nursing home members at Unity Health & Rehab Center in Miami took to the streets to fight for a fair contract and quality care. Healthcare champion and State Representative Ronald Brisé stood with us and made a commitment to hold the nursing home industry accountable for how it spends taxpayer dollars. This was the tenth nursing home picket in three months.

Thousands of nursing home members wrote their personal stories to the state legislature about why we need 2.9 levels restored and we won. The funding was supposed to ensure that those who care for Florida’s most vulnerable populations are given the resources they need to provide these important services. Now that we are at the bargaining table,  the industry is refusing to pay living wages for our lifesaving work.

Seacrest, one of Florida’s largest long term care operators has 55 facilities. They reported $8 million in profits in 2008 (source:  Medicaid Home Office Cost Report, year ended 6/30/08). This profit does not include:

• Individual facility profits for each nursing home (one facility in Hollywood alone reported 2008 profits of $1.2 million);
• Profits of the related-party real estate partnerships that Seacrest leases from;
• Profits from other related-party management and consulting companies that Seacrest pays.
